Juan Ortiz-apuy: American Tourister

In American Tourister, artist Juan Ortiz-Apuy has modified an original set of the iconic American Tourister travel suitcase to mechanically inflate and deflate as passersby traverse the sidewalk in front of the Whippersnapper Gallery. Winner of the 3rd Annual HRM Contemporary Visual Art Purchase Program.
Mayor Peter Kelly and Halifax Regional Council are pleased to announce Juan Ortiz-apuy as the winner of the 3rd Annual HRM Contemporary Visual Art Purchase Program for his work entitled Species of Spaces (Sentence).


The purchased work can be viewed at Halifax City Hall during Nocturne: Art at Night, Saturday, October 15, from 6 p.m.- midnight. All the shortlisted works can also be viewed online at:

The exhibition features sixteen recent language and library works in a range of media, including bronze sculpture, wood cabinetry, drawing, photography and video.The exhibition is accompanied by an artist-designed publication with an essay by the curator. Disruptions is one of the cornerstone exhibitions for Carnegie Days 2011, MacLaren's annual festival of art and language during which it celebrates its building’s origin as a 1917 Carnegie public library.
