Juan Ortiz-Apuy was born in Tilaran, Costa Rica in 1980 and currently lives and works in Montreal. Ortiz-Apuy has a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal (2008), a post-graduate diploma from the Glasgow School of Art, Scotland (2009) and a MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, Halifax (2011).

Recent solo exhibitions include, The Freedom Fighter Manual at Gallery PUSH, Montreal, Spaces of Shadows & Other Mirrors at Anna Leonowens Gallery, Halifax, Juan Ortiz-apuy: Disruptions at the MacLaren Arts Centre in Barrie, Ontario, and American Tourister at Whippersnapper Gallery in Toronto. In 2010 he exhibited his video Disruptions at the 23rd Images Festival of Media Arts, Toronto, during which he was also a presenter at the International Experimental Media Congress at OCAD University.

In 2010-11 his work was the winner of Dazibao's Jeune Tête d'Affiche Concours and the annual Halifax Regional Municipality Contemporary Visual Art Award. His work has also been reviewed and published in various magazines, newspapers and books. Notable examples include Brave New Avant Garde by Marc James Léger and articles in Le Devoir, the Montreal Mirror and the Barrie Advance. Upcoming solo exhibitions include Sporobole Centre for Contemporary Art in Sheerbroke, Quebec and Galerie Antoine Ertaskiran in Montreal. In 2013, he will be the Artist-in-Residence at the University of Indiana.
